Are You Considering Using a Van as a Bug Out Vehicle? – Here’s How You Build One!

Are you considering converting a van into a bug out vehicle?

A van can make a great bug out vehicle but there are a lot of things that you need to consider when you’re making a purchase.

Which vehicle should you choose? How do you mock up the interior? How do you keep the project from needlessly draining your bank account? Digital Trends does a good job of summarizing all of these questions and more.

You want to head out into the wilderness with more than just a backpack and a rolled-up sleeping bag. Maybe you want to experience nature, or wait out the apocalypse. Either way, you want all of the comforts of home… or at least most of them. Basically, you need a camper van.

Camper vans sit somewhere between tenting and traditional RVs, offering the advantages of a vehicle without excessive bulk. Specialist companies have built some impressive rigs for money-no-object customers, but it’s also possible to build your own camper van on a more reasonable budget.

Adding solar power to a bug out vehicle can be one of the more intimidating parts of the project for people that aren’t familiar with installing solar panels. This one part of the project adds a whole laundry list of questions.

Luckily, there is a ton of information about how to install solar panels for use in all kinds of projects.

First, as with all solar projects, figure out how much power you think you will consume and work backwards. Try to avoid using air conditioners, heaters, microwaves, and blenders to greatly reduce your needs. Any product label will tell you how much power it needs, usually over the course of an hour. Determine your AC vs. DC needs (types of electricity) to know inverter size (turns battery power into a wall plug) and battery capacity. Always round up and try to decide if you plan to expand your needs, remember that batteries will live longer if you don’t fully drain it with every use.
